Campaigns and Movements from around Africa
Keep the oil in the soil
This is a flagship campaign of Oilwatch International and captures the overall aim of the network to stop the expansion of fossil fuels exploration and extraction globally. This campaign covers crude oil, coal and fossil gas. Africa faces an onslaught of fossil fuels speculators seeking to expand investments in the sector. Keep the Oil in the Soil is a major contribution of Oilwatch for tackling climate change and for protecting the environment of communities were the fossil fuels are being extracted. Ogoniland in Nigeria remains a signal community that has kept oil in the soil since 1993 when Shell was expelled from their territory.
Annex 0
We believe the time has come for the United Nations to confront the climate crisis by creating Annex 0 in the Convention on Climate Change, as a group of peoples or nations acknowledged for their contributions, and as an incentive for others to join the mission of leaving fossil fuels in the ground. We’ve had enough talk about abstract things like CO2 emissions – let’s talk about oil, gas, or coal, join the commitments of Annex 0, and make efforts in our organisations to support these resistance initiatives and struggles.
Fish not Oil
The Fish not Oil campaign works against the policies and actions that put the rich biodiversity of offshore and inland waters at risk, halting the expansion of extractive activities such as mining and oil/gas exploration in our waters and oceans. FishNet Alliance is a network of fishers engaged in and promoting sustainable fishing practices in line with ecosystem limits.
